How Do You Know When It's Time to Change Your Toothbrush Heads?

Sometimes sonic toothbrush heads seem like they can last forever. Unfortunately, over time, they breakdown and become useless. In this article I'd like to talk about how to know when to change this important piece of your daily routine and keep your pearly whites pearly!

My husband bought me my first Electric Toothbrush in 2004. It was a Phillips Sonicare Elite and I loved it! My friends had all been telling me about these new Sonicare Toothbrushes, but I just couldn't get my mind around the fact that an electric toothbrush could be such a great addition to my life.

In fact, I'd always thought that electric toothbrushes were more of a gimmick and didn't really work. I remember when I was a kid I would go to my grandparents house and my grandpa had this rotary type toothbrush with a chord and a plug and everything.

He also had one of those water-pik devices that sprayed water in between your teeth. I remember he let me use it once and I didn't really think it was that big of a deal. In fact, my teeth just felt strange after, but it didn't really get them clean feeling you know what I mean?

You know how after you brush your teeth they are really smooth feeling on your tongue? Well, this water-pik did more to just tickle my gums than anything. So I always thought that any sort of device that was designed to clean your chompers was more just a gimmick than anything and didn't really work.

In fact, I specifically remember sitting in a Dentist chair sometime in the 80's and the dental hygienist telling me that I always needed to brush every day, twice a day. Once in the morning when I woke up and once in the evening before I went to bed.

I followed her advice (and of course my parents had a little to do with that) and have never really had any major dental problems.

Well, fast forward to 2004 and I get my first Sonicare. I didn't really know what to think at first. In fact, it kind of tickled and I wasn't sure how just holding this device on my teeth could actually clean them, but it worked!

In fact, after I started using it on a regular basis, I had a regularly scheduled dentist appointment, and my teeth scored higher than they'd ever scored on the exam. (Not to mention the dental hygienist took less time picking away with that little metal hook on my teeth!)

Anyway- I was pretty happy about that. So even though the Sonicare felt a little strange in my mouth, I gave it a good try and it turns out it worked.

Well, six months later I went back for my regularly scheduled check up and found out that even though I'd been brushing regularly, my Sonicare wasn't doing as good of a job this time! I couldn't believe it. It was the exact same Dental Hygienist and Dentist, but my teeth didn't score as high as they did the time before and the plaque buildup was a little worse.

I couldn't understand it because I'd been doing the exact same routine, using the exact same toothpaste, and the exact same Sonicare toothbrush, but my teeth weren't as clean.

Well, I explained this to my Dentist, who is fortunately a really nice guy (he is a pilot and goes to that Oshkosh Air Show every year in Wisconsin- he also has the coolest coffee table gold-fish aquarium in the waiting room that my kids absolutely love!) but anyway, he explained to me that even though I had a Sonicare, it was very important that my husband and I change out the Toothbrush Heads on them regularly.

I had no idea.

Well, on the way home I stopped by Wal-Mart and looked for some replacements, but I couldn't believe the choices! There were so many, and they seemed really expensive! (not to mention I didn't know exactly what model I should get).

Well this, of course, caused me to go online and see what kind of sites there were out there that may have these kinds of things. I found this site: rel=nofollow [http://www.etoothbrushheads.com]www.eToothbrushHeads.com and it was EXACTLY what I was looking for.

Probably what I liked best about the site is that I could see all the reviews of all the different brands of Electric Toothbrushes and even Toothbrush Heads.

At any rate, you may be wondering what my Dentist told me in regards to how often Ishould change out the toothbrush head. Well, he said that with Sonic type electric toothbrushes, you can't really tell when they wear out with the bristles like you can with a regular toothbrush. In fact, I thought that was a little odd, but because of the way the sonicare toothbrushes work they don't require as much pressure so the bristles don't get bent, but they do lose their rigidity over time.

So a good rule of thumb that my Dentist told me is every 6 months you should replace your toothbrush heads. Basically, every time you go to get a tooth exam and cleaning, you should replace them.

Caio!
